Travel
▲ Fullon Hotel Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf
The Fullon Hotel Tamsui Fisherman’s Wharf is located in the Fisherman’s Wharf of Tamsui and next to the estuary of the Tamsui River, providing the view of the distant Guanyin Mountain and Bali Ferry. No matter it’s the mountain or ocean view, or the Tamsui sunset, the wonderful and excellent scenery will definitely impress you!
▲ Oxford College
The Oxford College is an interesting structure which incorporates the western and Chinese architectural styles and mimics the style of a siheyuan. During its construction, the architects would cut a sweet potato to shape an example when communication is too complex and difficult. Cement was replaced with the mixture of glutinous rice, dark brown sugar, lime and sand. The steeple on the roof has been misunderstood; however, it’s actually the pinnacle of a church in Chinese style. The shell holes on the outer wall left by the cannon fire from French warships during the Sino-French War are precious historic heritage. In 1914, the first western school, Tamsui Middle School, in Taiwan is opened at this place, which is also the birth place of Taiwan Theological College & Seminary, Tamkang senior high school and Aletheia University. It has been designated as a history museum by the Northern Synod of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan.
▲ Fort San Domingo
The three-century-old Fort San Domingo is the most well-known historic building in the Tamsui region. In 1629, the Spanish invaded Tamsui and built the Fort San Domingo as the base for its colonization in northern Taiwan. When the Dutch drove out the Spanish in 1642, they re-erected the fort at the exact same location. The Dutch were called “Âng-mn̂g” (red hair) at that time, hence the name “Âng-mn̂g-siâⁿ” (red hair fort) was used until this day. The Fort San Domingo stands on the vital location looking down on the Tamsui River, where the “Sut-Tâi Sunset”, one of the eight great scenes of Tamsui, combines historic spot and scenery in one place. Tourists can go up to the Fort San Domingo to enjoy the sunset scenery and have a fun and leisure time.
▲ Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, Bali
The museum exhibits the pre-historic culture of Taiwan. The display of the cultural goods excavated from the archeological sites enables the audiences to understand what the life of the Shihsanhang people was like. Past studies found that the Shihsanhang people lived during the period between 1800 – 500 BC, the prehistoric iron age of Taiwan. It is confirmed that they are the only prehistoric people with iron forging technology.
With a site area of approx. 11916 m2 and a floor space of approx. 6620 m2, the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology has been awarded the 1st prize from the Taiwan Architecture Award in 2002 and the 1st prize from the Far Eastern Architectural Design Award in 2003. The building concept was originated from the image of archaeological excavation and ancient people ferrying across the high seas. This museum is not only a community museum for local residents, but also an environmental and ecological museum on the left bank of Bali.
▲ Bali Left Bank
As the birthplace of Taiwanese culture, this place has beautiful natural scenery and cultural heritage to be promoted and developed with great efforts. In line with the “Urban and Rural Landscape Improvement Plan” proposed by the central government, the New Taipei City government proposed the “Bali Ferry and Riverbank Remediation Plan” specifically for the Bali district in order to utilize the natural scenery and cultural heritage at the estuary of the Tamsui River and the existing waterfront scenery and rich cultural heritage along Bali’s riverbank for the development of Bali’s local features and shaping of a cultural and recreational wonderland in northern Taiwan.
It is hoped that this will create new opportunities of cultural tourism and recreation industry for the Bali region by attracting tourists from the Greater Taipei area. It will also support the business, recreation, communication and management functions of the Taipei Harbor to establish the most important cultural park in northern Taipei.
From the Bali Ferry to the Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, a well-planned bike path is constructed ,and recreation facilities are set up for recreational purposes. It is well suited for tourists to ride a leased bike to enjoy the scenic spots along the left bank.
▲ Tamsui River Mangrove
On the river bank between Tamsui and Zhuwei stands the renowned and largest pure stand of Kandelia obovate in the world. In this preservation area, you can clearly observe the special and interesting “viviparity” process of Kandelia obovate as well as the lives of fiddler crabs, waterfowls and mudskippers. With the addition of the bike path connecting Tamsui and the Taipei Metro Hongshulin Station and the exhibition hall set up by the Forestry Bureau in the station, the Tamsui River Mangrove has become the most convenient and richest natural ecology classroom in Taiwan.
▲ Tamsui Old Street
The Tamsui Old Street generally covers the area from the Zhongzheng Rd area (from the Ferry area to the intersection of Zhongshan Rd), which loosely include Sanmin and Chongjian streets in the vicinity. On the Old Street, ancient buildings in unique flavors can be seen with antique art shops dotted among them, creating an atmosphere of antiquity. Tourists can have a fun time window shopping the meticulously crafted artifacts displayed along the street. Others spots that you can’t miss include Tamsui Ah-Gei, a famous snack in Taiwan, fish crisp and renowned Chinese-style wedding cake shops which attract huge crowds every time cake is baked. As the Old Street is situated closed to the estuary of the Tamsui River, street artists present their best performance on holidays here. Tourists can also enjoy the heart moving sunset scenery.
▲ Tien Yuen Temple Tamsui
Located at Shuiyuan Village (formerly known as Shui Jian Tou), Tamsui Township, New Taipei City, the temple enjoys convenient transportation as the place is only 5km from Tamsui downtown. A godly making quality is forged by the mountain and marine environments as the temple resides in the low mountain area to the north of the Datun Mountain and directly faces Tianshan foothills. From the parking square in front of the temple to the primordial mei flower-shaped pond (the 4 petals are represented by the crossroad), tourists can see a statue of Wu-Shan-Jen-Shang-Zun with a Tien-Shan-Tien-Ling pen in the right hand and a Chien-Kun-Chao-Ling tablet in the left hand. Stepping on the 21-step stair, the Tian-Shen gate will enter the eyes of those who go up all the way to the place of worship. In the worshiping area, two dragon statues facing each other decorate the main hall of the Wu-Ji-Tien-Yuan Temple. On the dragon side is the Chiu Shih hall where charity activities are organized on Sundays, whereas on the tiger side is the Kung-Te hall for worshipping the altars of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Peng-Lai Mountain Kai-Yuan Merit Spirits. Inside the Tien-Shan gate, a Wu-Shang-Chi-Jih-Yueh-Lung-Feng flag base is placed on the left side and a Yi-Yuan-Chu-Shuai-Chi-Chi-Hsing flag base on the right side. Turning to and climbing up the Lung-Pien-Hui-Lung road, the expansive, marvelous, majestic and fantastic Wu-Chi-Chen-Yuan heaven temple erects right before the hard climbers. Continuing the path through Chiu-Lung-Chan road and the heaven temple square to the heaven temple hall, tourists can pay their respect, pray for blessings and discover the mysteries of the universe during the process. Behind the heaven temple is the round shaped silver Wu-Chih-Hsuan-Hsu main hall, built to serve as the model for the construction of the Chen-Yuan heaven temple. This temple has acquired its magnificence with the divine mountain view resembling a hidden dragon and crouching tiger. As it is surrounded by blossoms and woods, an immersive greenness is grown beautifully with birds residing in such wonderful landscape. Every weekend, crowds of worshipers from near and far will come to the temple to offer incenses and pray for blessings, thus making this place the true religious holy land in northern Taiwan.
▲ Tiansinzih Water Central
Recently known as the secret scenic spot, Tiansinzih in Sanzhi, New Taipei City has crystal clear paddy fields that catch the reflection of the vast sky and is surrounded by mountain views, hence the name Little Bayan. This place has become the latest go-to place for photo shooting.
▲ Drop of Water Memorial Hall
The Drop of Water Memorial Hall is a Japanese style old wooden house constructed by Kakuji Minakami, father of Tsutomu Minakami , the late great Japanese writer, in Fukui prefecture, Japan in 1915 (Taisho 4) and relocated to Taiwan by the selfless supports from people in Taiwan and Japan as well as the assistance and hard labor given by volunteers. As Kakuji Minakami is a believer of the philosophy of the Japanese Zen master “Tarumizu” (滴水), he upholds the idea of cherishing everything in his whole life. To honor the relationship between both countries and all the people and volunteers involved in the relocation process, the building is named “Drop of Water Memorial Hall” after the idea of the efforts devoted by everyone as if drops of water converge into a stream. The building itself was dissembled in Japan and shipped to Tamsui, Taiwan in 2005. After 5 years, it was re-erected in the Tamsui Peace Park at the end of 2009.
▲ Cloud Gate Theater
Sitting in between the Tamsui Golf Club and Hobe Fort with Guanyin Mountain and Tamsui River estuary at distance, the Cloud Gate Theater is a light green glass curtain wall structure which blends in the tame landscape of greenness and tall trees.
On Feb 11, 2008, the rehearsal room, a corrugated metal house leased for 16 years in Wushantou, Bali, was destroyed in a fire. With many years of hard work and efforts gone in the flame, nationwide attention was drawn.
In April 2009, the Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation was approved under the strict review regulated by the “Law for Promotion of Private Participation in Public Infrastructure Project” and signed a contract with the New Taipei City (then Taipei County) government. The contract stipulated that the Cloud Gate can build a theater at the previous Radio Taiwan International location of 1.5 hectares by raising funds by itself. It also set an operation period of 40 years under the Cloud Gate Theater where an extension of 10 years may be granted if outstanding performance is observed. Once the operation period ends, the Cloud Gate Theater will donate and transfer the property to the New Taipei City government.
Under the contract terms, the directors of the Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation began their fundraising efforts and collected 4,155 private donations both domestically and internationally up to the end of 2013, leading to the commencement of the construction work.
On April 24, 2015, the Cloud Gate Theater gave its opening performance. The theater building complex consists of a grand theater with 450 seats, two rehearsal rooms/small theaters, an outdoor theater with a capacity of 1,500 audiences, offices and professional spaces. These are the workplaces for the Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre and Cloud Gate 2.
This theater is the first place in Taiwan built with private donations and the first ever creative field centered on performance art in the Chinese speaking world.
▲ Qianshui Bay Coast Park
With its beautiful seaside scenery of crescent shaped beach, Qianshui Bay in Sanzhi township is a famous scenic spot in northern Taiwan. The coastline has both rocky shores and sand beaches in addition to the coastal terrain of white sandy shores and green algae-covered algal reefs. Not far from the shore lies a Reef area where tourists would enjoy the waves and pick up shells on the beach and anglers would go fishing here when it’s low tide. In recent years, surfing lovers have been attracted to Qianshui Bay to show their great skills.
With the completion and activation of the Qianshui Bay Coast Park, the improvement of the coastal trail planning, the construction of wooden paths and sea viewing platforms, tourists are provided with a more comfortable and safer amenity-oriented environment for them to listen to the waves and enjoy the scenery. It is also a great place to admire sunset and for lovers to make wishes under the starry sky. In the southern island mood unique to summer created by the blue ocean and white clouds, you can take a walk on the trail at evening and observe the sunset glow on the horizon in silence. Or, you may choose to have a great bite at the feature cafes beside the shore and enjoy the cool sea breeze.
▲ Tamsui Stone Trap
Inspired by the fame of the Twin-Heart Fish Trap in Penghu, the Tamsui Fishermen's Association has repaired and revamped the previously broken stone trap to a heart-shaped one – the Tamsui Stone Trap. It has become a brand new scenic spot in combination with the charming local sunset. Nevertheless, the stone trap only rises above the surface twice a day, making it a mysterious wonder.
Tourists heading to Tamsui can not only enjoy the beautiful beach and sea view during the walk at the sweet heart-shaped stone trap, they will also feel the beauty of Tamsui’s rich fishery culture through the beauty of the stone trap.
▲ The Eight Great Scenes of Tamsui
Guanyin Mist (Guanyin Mountain), Datun Spring (Main peak of Datun Mountain),
Hong –Kang Overlooking (the hill where the Tamkang University resides), Pines in Martyr's Shrine (New Taipei City Martyr's Shrine),
Estuary Sunset (estuary of the Tamsui River), Sand Bank & Moon (sand bank between Tamsui and Bali),
Lone Sail in Misty Rain (Tamsui River) and Shade of Fishing Port ( old Tamsui fishing port)
▲ The Eight New Great Scenes of Tamsui
Puding’s Scenery - Fort San Domingo , battery, Martyr's Shrine, Puding area, Drop of Water Memorial Hall and Peace Park. The Puding area is the mountain area guarding the estuary of the Tamsui River and the portal connecting Taiwan to the world. From the Spanish and Dutch rule to Kingdom of Tungning, Qing dynasty rule, Japanese rule and present ruling government, this place is not only the crossroad of great historic events, but also the most exotic land in Taiwan. The legend of Puding, Tamsui has been demonstrated by the Fort San Domingo, Oxford College and Tamsui Customs Officers' Residence.
Datun Greenness - Shui Jian Tou, Sankongquan, Datun Stream and sea of flowers in the Datun Mountain. Many compelling and attractive scenic spots are hidden in the Datun Mountain, namely Shui Jian Tou, Sankongquan and Datun Stream, that make you yearn for a trip. Looking at the Datun Mountain from a distance, the vivid jade green color looks as if it’s going to fly towards and spread across the sky. The blue sky and white cloud interlace and intertwine in a picturesque image painted by the divine existence high above.

The scenery of human culture intertwined with nature makes tourists come back again and again.
Mangrove & Bridge - Mangrove and Guandu Bridge. Mangroves are innocent and romantic children fostered by the interlacing salt and fresh water. Swayed by the high and low tides on the riverside of the Tamsui River, it nurtures the booming ecology of mudskippers, egrets and fiddler crabs. The expansive mangroves surrounds the magnificent Guandu Bridge and create a sense and beauty of wind riding.
Estuary Sunset - Sunset at Tamsui River. The glittering waves of the Tamsui River flow far and wide with the expanding stream into the sea at the estuary, presenting a wonderful scene of a vast sea under the sky above. Every dusk, the neon like afterglow lights up the sky as if a brush paints on the heavenly made canvas with pallets of stunning colors to create an eternal impression of “the most marvelous sunset red”.
moon reflection over Guanyin - Guanyin Mountain and night view. Whether you are strolling along the riverside of the Tamsui River or riding on the speeding MRT at night time, the reflection of the Guanyin Mountain across the river on the dark river surface forms a mysterious scene vastly different from day time. At night, the Tamsui River is like a magician traveling far and wide and uses its magic to transform the reflection of the Guanyin Mountain beyond everyone’s wildest imagination.
Heritage at Hobe Street - Tamsui Old Street and temples. The winding Hobe Street is an old alley hiding inside the Tamsui Old Street that leads curious visitors to its treasures at the very end. This place has been the center of Tamsui residents’ lives with historical sites recounting the interesting and intriguing histories of Tamsui. You are invited to visit the reconstructed street, historic spots and temples, century old stores and Hongs relics to study the history book of Tamsui.
